Digital Camera Problems - 20060302

Bought another
Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P72 Digital Camera
IT was sold as "PARTS" on EBAY for CHEEP
Replacement had Same Problem
"Turn camera off and on again."
Searched the web for the problem
Then learned WHY

I have a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P32 , I've had it for under a year. When I turn it on it beeps and says,

"Turn camera off and on again."

I've done that, I've put new batteries in it,
a new memory card,
but it still keeps displaying the same message.
The lens is open, but it won't allow me to take pictures.
Any idea what's wrong?

You should definitely buy another camera, if that one is in need of repair, the expense is not worth your trouble. Chances are, there are no pictures in the memory stick. I suggest that you get a different camera,

perhaps by Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Minolta, etc.

- Camera makers who actually specialize
in the area of photography.
I never liked the proprietary attitude of Sony.

I experienced the same problem and in a fit of gung-ho DIY home electronics I started to take the camera apart and never really expected to get it back together again.
There are only four screws at the back and if you remove these then the back can be gently prized open (the fourth screw is revealed when the memory card is removed).
When you have taken the back off you will need to remove the two leads between the front and the main body of the camera. The shutter mechanism is then revealed. I gently nudged the motor forward and back to open and close the shutter and left it in the open position. Upon reassembly the camera was functioning again - woohoo!
Hope this helps.
ps I take no responsibility for what may happen when you open the camera and I can't guarantee that its the same cause for the error message.
